If you’ve lived in the Joplin area for long, you know that the "to-do" list for your vehicle never really ends. Between dodging potholes on Main Street and keeping up with oil changes, there is one task that every Missouri driver eventually faces: the state safety inspection. While it might seem like a chore, the safety inspection is a vital part of keeping our Southwest Missouri roads safe for everyone.

At Downtown Lube, we’ve been helping our neighbors in Historic Downtown Joplin navigate these requirements since 1995. We know your time is valuable, so we’ve put together this quick guide to help you breeze through your next inspection without the stress.

Who Needs an Inspection in 2026?

There is often a lot of "shop talk" and rumors regarding changes to Missouri’s inspection laws. To keep it simple: if your vehicle is more than ten years old (based on the model year), you generally need a safety inspection every two years to renew your plates. If you just bought a used vehicle, you’ll need a fresh inspection to get it registered in your name, regardless of the age.

One question we get a lot at our shop on 1st and Main is about emissions. Fortunately for Joplin residents, Jasper and Newton counties do not require emissions testing—only the safety inspection is required here.
